Type Locality and Naming
Charrat Gr – upper formation in Trans Indus-Potwar Province (TrI-PP). Holotype section: Chorgali Pass, Khairi Murat Range. Author: E. H. Pascoe, 1920. Reference section: None.
Lithology and Thickness
Clayey limestone. The formation is divisible in two distinct units in the type section. The Lower part consists of shale and limestone, while the Upper part is mainly limestone. The shale of the lower part is greenish grey or buff and calcareous, and the limestone is light grey and argillaceous. In the Upper unit the limestone is white or cream color, porcellanous and well bedded. In the Hazara area, the formation is composed of thinly interbedded limestone and marl, which are light to pale grey and weather light yellow to cream. In Kalachitta Range, the limestone is slightly nodular and contains chert lenses. In the Salt Range also the formation is divisible into two units. The lower part consists of shale and limestone, while the upper part is mainly limestone.
Thickness: 15-150 m. It is 150 m at the type section, 30 m in Tarki, 15 m at Bahadur Khel and about 45 m in southeastern Hazara.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Conformably underlain by Sakesar Limestone Fm in Trans Indus-Potwar Province (TrI-PP)and by Margala Hill Limestone in Kohat-Margala Province (Ko-MP).
Upper contact
Unconformably overlain by Murree Fm in Trans Indus-Potwar Province (TrI-PP).and conformably by Kuldana Fm in Kohat-Margala Province (Ko-MP).
Regional extent
The formation is developed in Eastern Salt Range, Kalachitta Range, Khairi Murat Range and Hazara area. It has been encountered in oil wells drilled in Potwar and Thar-Cholistan Province (T-CP).

Fossils
Richly fossiliferous. Forams include Assilina leymeriei, A. spinosa, A. daviesi Fasciolites oblonga, Flosculina globosa, Globorotalia reissi, G. wilcoxsensis, Globogerina prolata, Lockhar tia conditi, L. hunti, L. tipperi, Nummulites atacicus, N. mamilla etc.
